The Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 gives the Minister for Energy and Environment the power to declare Areas of Outstanding Biodiversity Value (AOBVs). These are special areas that contain irreplaceable biodiversity values that are important to the whole of New South Wales, Australia or globally.

These guidelines outline the requirements for nominating an Area of Outstanding Biodiversity Value and the process the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment will follow for assessing and recommending them.
