Waste Point in Kosciuszko National Park includes about 6 six hectares on the edge of Lake Jindabyne – about 21 kilometres east of Perisher Valley and 13 kilometres north west of Jindabyne.

Waste Point has been used as a management base since the 1950s and contains a collection of houses, a small research station, a works depot and water supply, waste water treatment and utility infrastructure. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is considering how Waste Point can deliver an economic, environmental and social benefit for Jindabyne and the broader Snowy Mountains region.

This preliminary master plan aims to deliver ideas, including a design solution, for creating a nature-based experience for people at Waste Point. The plan aims to responds to the site’s history, values, demand, feasibility and community aspirations for the site.

This report adopts a place-making approach to create a great lakeside precinct for locals and visitors. It also addresses the context, issues, processes, challenges and opportunities for the site, which include enabling people to experience the site and learn about its history and the surrounding environment.

Public consultation

This preliminary master plan was on public exhibition from 18 July to 29 August 2017 and provided members of the community with the opportunity to have a say in the future management of Waste Point.

The preliminary master plan identified and explored possibilities to create a lakeside precinct for locals and visitors to Waste Point. All submissions received during the exhibition period will be considered during preparation of the final master plan.

The final plan will seek to deliver a suitable and appropriate design solution that responds to site values, demand, feasibility and community aspirations for the site.
