Significance and significant fabric

This fact sheet explains ‘significance’ and ‘significant fabric’. ‘Heritage significance’ or ‘significance’ and ‘significant fabric’ are terms used to assess and understand heritage items and places.

Significant fabric is all the material of the place/item which contributes to an item’s heritage significance.

Fabric can include building interiors, sub-surface remains, and excavated material. Fabric can also be natural elements of a place e.g. the rocks that signify a Dreaming place. Fabric may define spaces and views, and these may be part of the significance of the place.
