Landscape management

The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (the former OEH) undertakes research to better understand the function and human interaction with the landscape. Well-informed and integrated landscape management supports long-term ecological, social and economic sustainability objectives.

Landscapes are defined as significant tracts of land with a common history of natural processes including pedological, geological, climatic and evolutionary history, and societal processes (including cultural heritage). Landscapes have assemblages of natural attributes which have evolved into recognisable patterns of landforms, soils, biotic communities, water features and landuses.
